ABOUT SAVOY

Are you looking at this website because you have a child-related issue that’s bothering you?

Are you overwhelmed by the amount of advice out there, that at times contradicts what some other child expert advises?

Have you tried many things and yet the problem still remains?

I may be the person that can help.

My name is Vanessa Campion. I am a registered nurse and Health Visitor, Holistic Sleep Coach and am DRB checked. Over the past 20 years, I have worked with hundreds of families professionally as well as raising 4 children of my own. This has given me a wealth of knowledge and experience that may answer your questions and concerns.

I believe that parenting a child is a life long experience. Indeed, an experienced Midwife once told me that the Umbilical cord is never cut, it just lengthens! With increased knowledge about attachment we know how important it is to be attuned to our children. To respond to them in a caring, responsive and compassionate way. To listen, praise and play with them and also to give them boundaries. Children are not born with an innate sense of what is desirable and less desirable behaviour. They need their parents to do that for them. Sometimes a parent needs help with that and that’s where I step in.

I believe in working alongside a family to address an issue. I recognise parents have many strengths and are indeed the experts on their own child. My approach is to incorporate that and to devise a plan of action that is both realistic and acceptable to my client.

I believe my added value is on several fronts. Firstly, my advice is closely linked to the age and stage of development that a child is at. For example, I know how developmentally inappropriate it is to try to get a baby under 3 months of age into a strict routine. Secondly through my work as a Nurse and Health visitor my practice and advice are based on results of research.

My personal experience of being a parent to four children, all of whom are now young adults mean I know what it is like, the highs, the lows of bringing up the next generation.

Finally, I feel my personality and interpersonal skills are a real strength. I am described as being warm, friendly, practical, welcoming and non-judgemental. Feedback from parents and colleagues are that they feel at ease with me, enjoy working with me and trust my judgement.

My overall aim is of course to work towards solving a problem. Alongside this I want to encourage and support the many innate parenting skills people have but somehow don’t believe in especially when they have contacted an external person like me for support. My aim is to relieve stress and to give strategies for dealing with the many challenges these little and wonderful human beings can present us with.

PACKAGE 1
The Early Days Package

Congratulations on your new arrival!

So, you are home with your new baby – life will be different now.

The early weeks are very intensive as your baby is adapting to life outside the womb along with you adapting to the role of being their parent. Before you were a parent the amount of sleep you had was determined by you and your routine. In the early months with a new baby your sleeping pattern is directly affected by your child’s feeding, sleeping, care and attention needs. Babies wake frequently day and night.

There is no ‘set routine’. Every day and night will be different. This is normal baby behaviour. For you as a parent sleep deprivation is to be expected in the first 8-10 weeks along with your life being very much ‘baby-led’. Therefore, avoid anyone claiming to be an ‘Infant Trainer’ or able to get a new born baby into a fixed routine.

You may find you have many questions and queries. I aim to answer your questions in a non- judgmental and supportive way. I wish to increase your confidence level (because after all no one knows your baby as well as you do!) and assist you on your parenting journey. With breast feeding I am trained using the recommended UNICEF baby friendly way.

With my knowledge of child development and experience of working with many families with very young children, I feel I am well placed to give the advice and support you need.

Package lasts for 3 weeks and includes:

  • 1 x 90 minute consultation in the home or remotely.
  • 1 x 60 minute follow up consultation 1 week after the initial consult.
  • A comprehensive summary will be included that will detail our discussion along with any advice as well as an action plan. This will be emailed to you.

Introduction to good sleeping behaviours

By 8 weeks of age babies have often acquired good feeding skills. They are not feeding as frequently as the new born phase but still require feeding at night. They are developing social skills such as good eye contact, smiling, vocalising, such as cooing. Babies from the age of 60 days (8 weeks,4 days) have started to produce higher levels of Melatonin.

Melatonin signals to the body that it is night time and initiates and maintains sleep. This is what is known as the circadian rhythm. This is an ideal time to help your child develop good sleeping patterns for day time and night time sleep. The support for this package will be helping you to understand what is normal with regards your baby’s wakefulness and sleep. Along with this I will help you to recognise your baby’s tired signs and give you ideas for helping them to settle. We will also look at their daytime sleep and make sure that this is appropriate for their stage of development so that they don’t become overtired. We will also look at the bedtime routine. All these things help to lay the foundation of them developing good sleeping behaviours.

I will also show you what changes you can make in the home to encourage your child’s natural circadian rhythm.

For babies aged 8 weeks to 6 months.

PACKAGE 3
Sleep Management Plan
For children 6 months and older

When your child is 6 months or older, lack of sleep at night for you is a tough, tough challenge. For babies under 6 months of age night time waking is both normal and to be expected. Babies from 6-12 months of age can wake 1-3 times at night and this is also normal. Babies from 6 months of age start to wean from a milk diet to a solid one. They can have longer consolidated periods of sleep. From 1 year of age most children sleep through the night. There will be the occasional night time waking but this becomes less frequent with age.

If your child’s sleeping habits are a problem for you, then it is possible to make a difference. Changing behaviour also known as behaviour modification takes time, commitment and perseverance. It is also hard. Think of adults who want to change their behaviour about their diet and want to lose weight. It is not sorted over night and often takes time before a positive change is made. Changing sleeping habits also takes time. The way you change a child’s behaviour is by responding to it in a certain consistent way. Your child will then start to learn that the expectation at night is to sleep. If they wake up or resist going to bed, they will learn that mummy and daddy are there, but the only choice is bed and to stay in their bedroom. Good sleeping behaviour will become established and last a lifetime.

I will make an assessment with you and then form an action plan that suits your parenting style. My approach will incorporate what is known as the gentle method. This method does take time but it allows you and your child to adapt to each change at your own pace with you present for reinforcement and reassurance.

The package of support will last for 3 weeks and include:

  • 1 x 90 minute consultation in the home or remotely.
  • This will include an assessment and discussion of your chosen sleep management plan.
  • 1 x 60 minute follow up consult day 4-5 of plan either in the home or remotely.
  • A comprehensive summary will be included that will detail our discussion along with any advice as well as an action plan. This will be emailed to you.

Dealing with Tricky Toddler Behaviours

Parenting is full of challenges. Children grow and develop at a rapid rate. Sometimes the behaviour they can display can be upsetting, frustrating and very demanding. Behaviour in the toddler years which can be seen as ‘naughty’ is actually quite normal and part of growing up. I aim to give you strategies that counteract the common behaviour problems that children can display. I use the ‘Positive Parenting’ approach as it supports child development, taking into account the stage of development a child is at so that the strategies are more effective which in turn reduces parental stress

The package lasts for 3 weeks and includes:

  • 1 x 90 minute consultation in the home or remotely.
  • 1 x 60 minute follow up consultation 1 week after the initial consult, either in the home or remotely.

TESTIMONIALS

I know Vanessa professionally and personally and I could not recommend her more, if you’re in need of any parenting support. She has helped me with many challenges I have faced with my child and has always reassured me and helped improve and solve situations, as well as giving me lots of brilliant advice. Vanessa is such a friendly, kind and helpful person, with a wealth of knowledge of babies and children. There’s nothing she won’t be able to help you with! Don’t hesitate to contact her if you require support - you won’t be disappointed. Xx

Vanessa has had many years working alongside parents and has developed great expertise in helping new parents gain confidence with their new babies.

Vanessa has been an amazing help and support throughout the pregnancy and birth of my daughter, Grace. Vanessa has offered us guidance, tips and the personal support that is very much needed. We have great family support, friends and NCT to go too but Vanessa offers her professional opinion and reaches out at the times that you really need her. Would highly recommend!

I have followed Vanessa’s advice since my baby was newborn and I continue to use the methods and techniques I have been shown. I’ve really gained confidence, which has been so important for me, especially as I don’t live nearby to my family. Vanessa’s approach is so encouraging and understanding of myself and my baby as an individual.
